Detroit stops mailing income tax forms as more residents opt for electronic filings

DETROIT — The city will no longer mail income tax forms to residents, a move that will save $100,000 annually.

"As tax filing technology has become more advanced over the past several years, fewer people have continued to utilize printed paper forms," said Robert Short, Detroit’s chief financial officer. "We felt it would be more cost effective to provide a printable version of the form on our Web site and at select locations across the city."

Public library branches and five Neighborhood City Hall offices this week will receive printed forms this week. People can pick the forms up beginning next week.

Income tax forms also can be picked up from room 512 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building form 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The forms no longer being mailed are the D-1040 resident, D-1040 nonresident, D-1065 Partnership, D-1120 Corporate and D-1040 Part-year resident.
