United Way starts Earned Income Tax program

CHENANGO COUNTY The Chenango County United Way again this year will prepare income taxes in with its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

Members of the local partnership committee include the Chenango United Way, Opportunities for Chenango, Cornell Cooperative Extension, AARP Tax Aid, Colgate University and Upstate Institute, GHS Federal Credit Union, the IRS, NBT Bank, Morrisville State College and Partners Trust Bank.

In 2005, 41 tax returns were filed through the project, and $39,688 was returned to Chenango County in earned income tax credits. In 2006, 150 tax returns were filed and $139,835 was returned to the county in earned income credits.

A Super Saturday event will mark the beginning of this year's Chenango County project from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Morrisville State College Community Room in Norwich. The day's events will open with a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Local financial institutions, employment services and health and human service agencies will showcase displays throughout the morning. Residents may schedule free tax preparation appointments with trained volunteer tax preparers.

Opportunities for Chenango also will be expanding its financial literacy workshops at more than 12 sites throughout Chenango County during this year's tax season.
