NFU Urges Wind Energy Tax Credit Extension

WASHINGTON (Dec. 4, 2006) - National Farmers Union (NFU) is urging support for the nation's growing wind industry by calling on Senate leaders to extend the wind energy Production Tax Credit (PTC).

In a letter sent today to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley and Ranking Member Max Baucus, NFU President Tom Buis urged the Senators to support wind power by extending the PTC before it expires on Dec. 31."If we are serious about striving for energy independence, as I know both of you are, then we need the legislative tools available to reach that goal. The PTC is one of those tools," Buis said.

Buis said that NFU would like the PTC to be a long-term, 20 year extension; include active, not passive, income tax credits; encourage local wind turbine ownership, manufacturing development and operations; and set higher levels for local, community and farmer-owned wind systems.

"The PTC is vital in the planning and proliferation of wind farms across the United States," Buis said. "In the last extension, the PTC had wide, bipartisan support and we would like to see the legislation moved forward yet in this Congress and not left for an already busy first session of the 110th Congress."
